The city of St.Catharines is reminding residents that there is a by-law that bans the use of pesticides.

Officials saying they are aware that dandelions are back in full force and some parts of the city appear "unkempt" because weeds grow faster than grass.

Dandelions flourish in the late spring and early summer months, which is why crews will be performing additional grass cuttings over the coming weeks to remove unsightly flowers and seed heads.

City crews do not use pesticides or herbicides in the maintenance of turf; but instead focus on environmentally friendly cultural practices.

As a reminder to residents, the provincial pesticide by-law prohibits the use of herbicides on public and private property to control weeds, including dandelions.

City officials offering advice to keep weeds away:

-Homeowners can prevent their lawn from becoming a sea of yellow by following these simple grass maintenance tips:

-Raise your lawnmower's blades to 3¨ to shade out weeds and slow their growth.

-Over-seed and top dress your lawn with compost. Over-seeding ensures weeds do not have room to take root while compost adds nutrients to your lawn's soil.

-Aerate your lawn in the early spring to allow water and air to keep roots healthy.

-Fertilize your lawn in the spring and fall.

-Add white clover to your lawn. White clover is low growing, stays green and adds nitrogen to the soil benefiting the grass.

-Water in the early mornings or evenings, and use sprinklers or soaker hoses that keep water low to the ground. Water only when needed.

-Residents can report any park maintenance issues to Citizens First at 905.688.5600 or citizensfirst@stcatharines.ca
