Expanding CPP on debate in Vancouver

Reforming the Canada Pension Plan will be on the menu tonight as the country's finance ministers sit down for two days of talks in Vancouver.

But whether the ministers have an appetite for expanding the federal pension plan remains to be seen.

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has been pushing for expansion.

She says not enough people are saving for their golden years.

The political arguments about what to do with CPP boil down to whether to have an across the board change that would affect all workers and employers, or target workers who are the least likely to save.

According to federal research, workers with too little put aside tend to be under the age of 30 and those earning between 55 and 75 thousand dollars a year.

The federal and provincial governments are also looking at increasing the yearly maximum pensionable earnings, currently set at 55 thousand dollars.

Behind the scenes, proponents and opponents of an expanded CPP expect some kind of deal to be reached tomorrow, but the final details remain unclear.
