The province announcing a long anticipated highway project that should speed up the drive between Hamilton, Guelph and Waterloo.

Provincial officials were on hand yesterday to announce a realignment of Highway 6, south of the 401.

The project means motorists will be able to bypass the five kilometre stretch through Morriston village.

The bypass is expected to start near Freelton, where Highway 6 goes down to two lanes, then head west around Morriston to a roundabout northwest of the village.

At the roundabout motorists can take exits to Brock Road Bridge as well as to the 401.

It's expected the province will widen the 401 to 10 lanes heading into Kitchener.

No word on a pricetag but work is slated to begin in 2019.
