A St.Catharines senior hurt in a tragic kitchen fire Wednesday afternoon has died.
The fire broke out at 1 o'clock in the afternoon at a home on Dufferin Street East.
Firefighters put the blaze out quickly, but found a man suffering from critical injuries.
The man was rushed to hospital and city officials say he died overnight.
Fire Chief Dave Wood tells CKTB that the resident was making something on a pot on the stove, and when there were complications he tried to move the materials outside of the house, and in the process spilled the hot liquids onto himself.
Wood says the man suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns all over his body and died from injuries overnight.
He adds that with burns that bad, especially on an older victim, treatment is a very difficult process.
Firefighters will visit residents in neighbourhoods around Dufferin Street East to discuss fire safety today.
Officials say the tragedy is a sobering reminder of the importance of having working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and an emergency escape plan in place.
Fire Chief Dave Wood say they are taking the time to visit residents to make sure they understand how to protect themselves from the dangers of fire.
Firefighters will canvas Dufferin Street East and the surrounding area Thursday afternoon to hand out information packages and meet with residents to discuss fire safety.
Packages include information on home escape plans, smoke and CO alarms and kitchen safety.
Firefighters will also test smoke and CO alarms.
The Office of the Fire Marshal, St. Catharines Fire Prevention Officers and the Niagara Regional Police are still investigating the cause of Wednesday's fire.
