Niagara Regional council will spend $120,000 to hire an expediter to help businesses cut through the red tape.

Niagara Falls councillor Bart Maves who supports the move tells 610 CKTB's Tom McConnell, the expediter will work in the planning department.

Maves says the motion to create the position was championed by Grimsby Councillor Tony Quirk.

He says the motion also included a two year review, so council will be given the opportunity to revisit the position and make sure it's working.

The councillor notes the expediter will help businesses get approvals from not just the region, but muncipalities and provincial departments.

He gives an example of a dentist who took two years to get approvals to set up an office in Niagara.

He says an expediter would know how to manoeuvre through the various approval levels and would have saved her a lot of time and money.
