Brock graduate student wins contest with research on body image

Women working out in the gym won't feel uncomfortable looking at themselves in full-length mirrors if their trainers get them to see beyond superficial appearances, says Brock University's winner of this year's Three Minute Thesis competition.

Graduate student Carly Cameron says societal pressures to appear slim and beautiful may initially cause many women to be anxious when they view their reflections. But when those women use the mirror to develop correct techniques and form during exercise, that anxiety disappears.

"My research showed that women can leave the gym feeling happy, healthy and ready to return tomorrow," says Cameron. "They simply need to be reminded that, when they look in the mirror, they should be checking their form."

Cameron was one of five Brock finalists in Thursday's Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, in which students clearly explain their research in three minutes.

They can only use a single PowerPoint slide, with no other props or visual aids.

The idea is to develop presentation and communication skills among student researchers so that they are able to explain complicated concepts in plain language that general or non-specialist audiences can understand.

"After years of using language that's highly specialized in my field, this competition made me think about the big picture impact of my research and how to convey that to the public," says Cameron.

"To be given the opportunity to share this with the broader community is a fantastic way to bridge the gap between research and practice."

Cameron will represent Brock at the 3MT Ontario competition in Waterloo
April 14.

The top five presenters from there will move onto the national level, an online competition co-ordinated by the Canadian Association of Graduate Schools.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is elaborating on his government's plan to invest in public transit.

Trudeau says the $3.4 billion included in last month's budget for transit infrastructure will begin rolling out to municipalities this year.

The prime minister didn't specify how much individual communities would receive, but said that Ontario could expect to receive about half the money _ $1.5 billion.

Trudeau, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., says his government would pay for up to 50 per cent of individual project costs, and that provinces and municipalities could spend the money as they see fit.

Like many communities with largely resource-based economies, Sault Ste. Marie has been struggling with low commodity prices around the globe.

The city's bus services were cut recently as city council grappled with a budget shortfall, and the biggest employer in town _ Essar Steel Algoma _ has been under bankruptcy protection since last fall.

Premier Kathleen Wynne is to meet Monday with the opposition leaders to discuss what changes they would like to see made to political fundraising in the province.

Wynne is considering enacting stricter rules for byelection fundraising before introducing broader reforms this spring.

She has promised to introduce legislation to ban corporate and union donations, among other changes.

Wynne must call a byelection in the coming months because of the recent resignation of Liberal Bas Balkissoon, but that vote could happen before the fundraising reform legislation can pass.

Mulcair's leadership being tested at NDP convention this weekend

Tom Mulcair is looking for all the support he can get at this weekend's NDP convention in Edmonton.

Tomorrow the delegates will vote on whether they want to keep him as their leader following the party's poor showing in the fall election.

And now Mulcair is facing a possible feud with Alberta's governing New Democrats over the so-called "Leap Manifesto'', a party policy proposal that rejects pipeline development and calls for Canada to eventually wean itself off fossil fuels.

Premier Rachel Notley will address the convention today, and she's been adamant that building a pipeline from the oilsands to tidewater is critical to Alberta as it struggles with depressed oil prices.

There is open hostility toward the Leap Manifesto from within the Alberta NDP, and Mulcair has taken flack for any suggestion of support for the plan.

Mulcair told the The Canadian Press yesterday that it's dangerous to characterize the Leap Manifesto as being about shutting down the oil sands, adding he would never support that, nor is it stated in the document itself.

More than 100 people are dead and another 200 are injured after a massive fire broke out during a fireworks display at a Hindu temple in southern India.

The fire started when a spark from the light show ignited a cache of fireworks that were being stored in the temple in Kerala state.

Local T-V channels showed images of huge clouds of white smoke billowing from the temple complex, as fireworks continued to detonate.

Successive explosions sent huge chunks of concrete flying as far as a kilometre, according to a local resident.

Yet another April snowfall on tap

Special weather statement in effect for:

  • Niagara Falls - Welland - Southern Niagara Region
  • St. Catharines - Grimsby - Northern Niagara Region

The latest battle between spring and a very stubborn winter is setting up for today and tonight across Southern Ontario.

A large Alberta Clipper approaching the Great Lakes from the northwest will spread a large area of snow into the region, with the snow expected to arrive in Southwestern Ontario this morning or early afternoon.

Snow will reach the Muskoka to Golden Horseshoe areas later this afternoon then spread into remaining regions this evening.

Snowfall amounts will range from near 2 cm over areas near Lakes Erie and Ontario, to 4 to 8 centimetres further north. Up to 10 centimetres of snow is possible in a few locales tonight especially in areas around Georgian Bay and the Dundalk Highlands to the Haliburton Highlands.

As a warm front associated with the clipper moves in, the snow will change over to rain by late afternoon in the Windsor area. The changeover to rain will then work its way northeastward with the warm front tonight across remaining regions of Southern Ontario. There may be a brief period of ice pellets or freezing rain during the transition from snow to rain.

Most areas should receive a total of 5 to 15 mm of rain before the rain ends on Monday.
