NRP say tax phone scam is making the rounds

Niagara Regional Police say a phone scam is making the rounds shaking up seniors.

Police say the scam involves people claiming to be from the Canadian Revenue Agency.

The name on the caller ID says CRA, or it's a number from the 613 area code.

The person claims to be an officer with the CRA, RCMP or local police.

The caller advises that your taxes for the past few years have been audited and there is an outstanding balance due right away.

You are told your accounts have been frozen, liens have been placed on your property and a warrant for your arrest is being issued unless you immediately pay the outstanding balance.

You are instructed to make immediate payment by means of prepaid credit cards, MoneyGram, Western Union (the caller will provide you with the nearest location) or an electronic transfer from your bank account.

The NRPS continues to receive numerous calls daily from concerned members of the public who haven't heard about the scam.

Many are elderly and are left shaken by the calls or messages received.

CKTB's Kevin Jack received a phone call from the "CRA scam" earlier this week.

He was told that he owed $3726 and had to pay it right away or he would be arrested.

The man on the phone instructed the radio host to stay on his cell phone while driving to his bank to make a transfer.

He said if the phone cut out at any point he could be arrested by the RCMP.

Kevin played along and recorded the call and played on his show this week.
