The final phase of restoration at the St. Catharines Cenotaph is underway.
The city says the 90 year old cenotaph’s seven bronze elements will be restored to their original, shiny finish over the next six weeks.
Crews began removing the bronze elements yesterday morning, including a large crest weighing between 250 and 300 pounds near the top of the cenotaph.
The bronze elements will be shipped to a specialist in Newmarket who will erase layers of patina, a green tarnish that naturally builds up over time on bronze, copper and similar metals exposed to oxygen.
The cenotaph is expected to be fully restored in time for Remembrance Day on Nov. 11.
