A gas leak in Beamsville this morning.
It happened just after 10am during road construction when crews were digging into the road bed on Mountain Street near Hillside Drive.
Police say a gas line was accidentally hit causing a stream of pressurized natural gas to leak into the air.
9-1-1 was called and members of the Lincoln Fire Department, Niagara Regional Police and Niagara Paramedics responded to the scene.
Police and members of the construction crew closed off a portion of Mountain Street to vehicle traffic, while Fire Department personnel evacuated 5 to 10 homes along Mountain Street as a precaution.
Enbridge Gas workers arrived at about 10:30 AM and were able to seal the leak within about 20 minutes.
By 11am residents were allowed to return to their homes.
There were no injuries reported. The Ministry of Labour has been notified
