Niagara police are reminding people to use only approved swimming facilities and never jump into unfamiliar water.

The advice comes after a 50-year-old man decided to jump off the train bridge into Twelve Mile Creek in St. Catharines last evening.

The bridge near Hillcrest Ave. is about 80 feet above the water.

Police say a group of people had been drinking throughout the afternoon when the man decided to jump in.

He was seriously injured.

His friends began to scream and yell for help which alerted some near-by residents.  Police, fire and EMS all responded to the calls for help.

He was taken to  St. Catharines General Hospital and then air-lifted to Hamilton General Hospital.

The man, who suffered a punctured lung and chest-related injuries, is listed in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.
