A notice has been issued by the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority saying Niagara has already received up to 35mm of rain, with another 20mm in the forecast.

The significant amount of precipitation combined with frozen and saturated ground will result in higher than normal water levels and flows within all local creeks and streams.

At the present time our major watercourses, the Welland River and 20 Mile Creek, are well below critical thresholds and the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) does not expect any widespread flooding at this time.

However, localized inundation of low lying, flood-prone areas is anticipated during this storm event.

Four Mile Creek in Niagara-on-the-Lake and 12 Mile Creek through Pelham, Thorold, and St. Catharines contain water levels which are presently elevated.

The NPCA urges residents living along these creeks to monitor the situation closely.

Water level increases will depend on the amount of precipitation received over the next 12 hours.

The NPCA will continue to monitor stream and weather conditions and will issue further messages as required.

Residents are urged to keep themselves, children, and pets well away from streams and creeks as these watercourses will be hazardous.

Drivers are reminded there is an increased risk of water over roads and should not drive through any flooded roadway.

Extra caution is advised particularly at night.
