A Niagara Regional Police Constable being called a hero after going into the icy water of Welland Canal yesterday to rescue a woman who had fallen into the water.
Police say the woman had fallen through the ice yesterday after trying to rescue her dog who had fallen into the water.
It happened just before 3 pm, along the west bank of the canal near Forkes Road in Dain City
Police threw a rope into the water but the woman was so cold she could no longer grip anything.
That's when Constable Chris Lindey shed his bulky equipment and went out on the ice to help.
However the ice collapsed causing Constable Lindey to plunge into the water
He managed to push the woman to safety.
The woman identified as Lia Ciocci was taken to Welland General to be treated for hypothermia.
Constable Lindey was also taken to hospital for treatment of exposure to cold water.
Both are expected to make a full recovery.
Unfortunately the dog was not recovered.
