South Niagara is getting hit with heavy flurries, snow squalls and gusty winds.

A Snow Squall Warning is in effect for South Niagara, including Niagara Falls, Welland and Fort Erie.

A band of lake effect snow off Lake Erie is now bringing flurries and blowing snow to the Southern Tier with accumulations in the 15 cm range and winds gusting to 70 kmh.

Marie-Eve Giguere with Environment Canada tells CKTB News there are very brisk south-westerly winds moving across Lake Erie.

She reports that a large squall hit Fort Erie late this morning dropping 10 centimetres of snow.

That squall is now over the Niagara Falls area.

Giguere says the squall will continue to "wiggle" throughout South Niagara until later this evening when a cold front moves in.

For North Niagara there is just a chance of flurries.

Snowsqualls will end tonight but there is a chance of flurries across the region with brisk winds continuing and a low near -19 and a windchill of - 29.

A cold weather warning is in effect.

The cold stays with us tomorrow, expect flurries, brisk winds and a high near -14 and a windchill of - 30.

We warm up slightly on Sunday with sunny skies, then more seasonable temperatures return in time for Family Day.

In anticipation of inclement weather, Niagara Student Transportation Services have cancelled the late buses for Lakeshore Catholic High School today.
