Despite the municipal election having occurred in October 2014, issues surrounding the election remain as the financial statements of a St. Catharines mayoral candidate are being called into question
St. Catharines City Clerk Bonnie Nistico-Dunk confirms to 610 CKTB a local resident is questioning the financial statements filed by Jeff Burch, who ran unsuccessfully in the last municipal vote.
The spending limit for a mayoral candidate in St. Catharines was $89 402 and Burch's statements show he came in at $58 892, well below the limit.
However, the request alleges Burch failed to accurately record the value of expenses and questions the legality of some of his donations.
A hearing will be held January 28th at St. Catharines City Hall to review the application and determine whether to proceed with an audit of Burch's financials.
The penalities for improper accounting range from dismissal of complaint to being barred from running in a future election.
