One person is dead and several Canadians are among the more than two dozen people injured after a car crashed into pedestrians on a sidewalk Sunday night on the Las Vegas Strip.

Police are now saying it appears the vehicle intentionally mounted the sidewalk in front of the Paris Hotel & Casino.

They say one person was killed and 37 were taken to hospital, including six in critical condition.

Danita Cohen, spokeswoman for University Medical Center, says at least five Canadians were brought to its trauma centre, one of whom was in critical condition.

She said at least two of the injured Canadians, a man and a woman, were from Montreal, and were in need of French translators.

Cohen noted the crash victims were being treated for head injuries, cuts and broken bones.

Las Vegas Police Captain Brett Zimmerman told a news conference that while '`terrorism'' had been ruled out, the crash appears to be intentional.

He said the driver apparently drove onto the sidewalk, hitting pedestrians, then went back into the street before driving onto the sidewalk again at a different spot of Las Vegas Boulevard, hitting others.

Police say the female driver left the scene, but was later arrested and was being interviewed and tested for alcohol and controlled substances.

Zimmerman said a three-year-old child was in the vehicle with her but wasn't hurt.
