SIU called in to investigate Fort Erie crash involving NRP

The province's Special Investigations Unit has been called in to investigate a serious crash in Fort Erie involving Niagara Regional Police.

It happened last night around 11:30 at the corner of Netherby and Stevensville Roads.

The intersection is closed until further notice.

Police are not releasing any further details.

But we do know one person had to be cut out of their vehicle by the fire department and rushed to hospital.

No word on their condition.

This is the eighth time this year the SIU has been called in to investigate an incident involving police in Niagara.

Here is a list of investigations:

October 20th- SIU called in after OPP pulls up behind vehicle on side of QEW in Vineland, 35 year old man exits vehicle and is struck by passing transport truck.

October 10th- Two NRP officers and a man suffer gunshot wounds after an incident at a Pelham residence on Canboro Road.

October 9th- NRP called to a Michael Street address in West Lincoln, locates man in rear yard of home.  While one of the officers is talking to the man, he sustains a gunshot wound and dies at the scene.

August 8th- NRP cruiser and motorcyclist collide in Niagara Falls at T- intersection of  Lyons Creek Road, Main Street and Sodom Road.

July 25th- Man sustains facial injury in interaction between OPP and NRP officers in Port Colborne.

July 5th- Two officers sustain serious burns in house fire in Vineland.  The bodies of a 73-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man were found inside home.

March 7th- 21 year old man injured in interaction with female NRP officer in Market Square in St. Catharines

January 1st- Police later cleared by SIU, after 23 year old man is injured after falling into Niagara Gorge in Niagara Falls.
